Even before coming to the Americas they were already rich, meaning they had servants and everything to help them with chores. They brought their whole families because they came here to stay. On the other hand, in New England, the lands were mostly mountainous. The mountains ran close to the shore, and the rivers were generally short and rapid. Also due to cold weather, tobacco couldnt thrive as it did in the Chesapeake. Instead, it was abundant of timber, fur, and fish which produce huge profits for New Englanders, yet under hard-works. Most of New Englanders worked on various jobs- small town farmers, artisans, or merchants. The Master of these servants would receive 50 acres of land for each servant he paid the passage. These fifty acres only added to tremendous greed already present in the Englishmen in 1607. The motives for settlement are wrong off the bat. As wa s the case in France, the gap really defers unity elsewhere. When defending against outer enemies in the Chesapeake region in the 1600s there really was no unity among the rich (the plantation owners) and the poor (servants and Negroes). It was really evident that the Governor of Virginia, Governor Berkeley, was frightened to be subtle in that he asked for troops from Britain to help ward off the Dutch attacks (Document G). People in the Chesapeake colonies were unhappy with the rich aristocrats running the show. Francis Bacon led a revolt in Virginia against Governor Berkeley. He felt that the lack of unity among all citizens was apparent and needed to change. He felt that the government at the time was doing an inadequate job at public work i.e. safety, defense, advancement of trade (Document H). This problem was not present among the citizens of the New England colonies as the goals of the New England citizens were different (Document A). The development in the two societies was apparent throughout the start of each colony and through the events occurring throughout its developmental period. New England and the Chesapeake colonies arose as separate states with separate motives and separate resultants with each method having its pros and cons for certain people. Credence Credence Credence By Maeve Maddox I started wondering about the use of the word credence when I noticed the following headline on an entertainment news site: Al Pacino gives credence to James Gunns ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ The noun credence (KREE-dns] usually functions as a synonym for credibility or believability. For example, â€Å"The premise of the argument lacks credence.† As much as I enjoyed the Gunn film, I find nothing believable about a tree creature that wins everyone’s affection by saying the same three words again and again, or a genetically engineered raccoon with anger issues. I decided to find out if credence has another meaning that fits the context of that headline. Credence belongs to a family of English words that derive from the Latin verb credere, â€Å"to believe.† For example: credo: a religious belief, a guide to behavior. credible: believable. credential: official documentation indicating that a person may be trusted. credit: favorable reputation; trustworthiness in financial matters. creditable: that which does a person credit, praiseworthy. credulity: a readiness to believe. credulous: inclined to believe on the basis of little evidence. The story ‘Metamorphosis’, unfolds as the author presents the life of a normal family under the protection of a hard working father and husband. However, as the story progresses, the author tells of a tragedy in which the family man transforms into an insect (Diyanni, 2007, p. 612). This means that this individual may no longer provide for his family. The author further notes that this man had never complained about having to provide for the whole family including his parents and siblings (Diyanni, 2007, p. 613). The negative side of the story is that the man who was a slave for his family becomes isolated, neglected and abused by the same people he cared for before his transformation. A good example is the story ‘The Lesson’, which entails a narration of the life of a young girl and her neighborhood. The girl lives in a less comfortable neighborhood and her family is unable to provide for themselves because the author indicates that others were helping them (DiYanni, 2007, p. 428). The situation is not any different from that of other kids in her neighborhood making these kids to hold a negative attitude and impression towards others especially outsiders. The author indicates that their attitude changes when one of the kids’ neighbors t akes them to a different neighborhood where life is much different. The first stop they made was at a toy store whereby the prices of various commodities shock them. At this point, the story brings the reader to seeing the change in the kids’ wanting. The change in the children’s attitude is attributable to their neighbor who had been away from the neighborhood and thus she had the experience of live in the outside world. This shows the significance of literature in terms of allowing the reader to travel to a world away from one’s own in order to explore new experiences in life. It is thus evident that an individual cannot realize the needs or endearments of others without this individual interacting or having a glimpse of the situation from the perspective of other individuals.
